Leicester City v Leeds United: Confident Warnock has hope for Varney

LEEDS UNITED chief Neil Warnock is keeping his fingers crossed that rejuvenated forward Luke Varney is fit enough to line up against hometown club Leicester City tonight.

The former Portsmouth striker, currently enjoying a renaissance after a tough first half of the season with the Whites, is a doubt for the game with the fifth-placed Foxes after being stretchered off with a leg injury in stoppage-time during the 1-0 weekend victory over Millwall after bizarrely being inadvertently tackled by team-mate Stephen Warnock.

Manager Warnock said: “His leg is badly bruised. He has had a lot of compression over the weekend.

“Luke will want to play, so if there is a chance, he will play. I would like to keep the same team if we can and leave it alone.”

Ninth-placed United go into the critical away double-header against the Foxes and the side just above them, Crystal Palace, on the back of a home win over the Lions.

While manager Warnock says a haul of five points from games against Millwall, Leicester and Palace would represent a handy return before a favourable run of fixtures, he insists his side will be going for the jugular in the next two matches.

“We did say it would be good to get five points from three games and then we can go and put the pressure on,” he said. “But we have started with a win and there is no reason why we cannot pick up another one. I do not think we have ever been anywhere to get a point. We have not set out our stall to do that.

“There are games where you think you might want to do that. But the teams we are playing are under pressure to get points.”
