Nunez negotiates Leeds deal and targets regular place

HONDURAN international Ramon Nunez has signed a new three-year deal at Leeds United.

Winger Nunez, 25, joined Leeds at the start of last season after spending the early stages of his career in Mexican football and the United States.

He finished last season on loan at Scunthorpe United but has scored five goals in 10 appearances for Leeds so far this season.

Although he has still to cement a regular first-team place, Nunez said: “I’ve no doubt that I’ll get my opportunity and when I do I’ll be looking to take it.

“Leeds is the club that gave me an opportunity and I’m happy here.

“It’s all about concentrating on my football and working hard to get into the team.

“Obviously getting in the Premier League is the goal of everybody here,” he added.

“We certainly have enough good players to do that.

Leeds are currently negotiating contracts with several players, including captain Johnny Howson, and Nunez follows defenders Tom Lees in putting pen to paper.

His deal, which expires in 2015, includes the option of an additional fourth year.

Barnsley manager Keith Hill hopes to have summer signings Craig Davies and Rob Edwards back from injury to face Portsmouth this weekend.

Striker Davies (hamstring) has played only four games since his arrival from Chesterfield while defender Edwards (hamstring) has missed the last four games.

Midfielder David Perkins will be sidelined for another two weeks with his hamstring injury.

Midfielder Alastair Taylor is spending the next month on loan at Worksop Town.

Former Barnsley and Rotherham United manager Mark Robins, meanwhile, has been interviewed for the Nottingham Forest job.

Robins is also a contender for the current managerial vacancy at Bristol City.

Sheffield Wednesday have now sold 8,000 tickets for the club’s beamback of the Steel City derby at Hillsborough.

Hull City striker Cameron Stewart is edging closer to a first-team return after seven months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The former Manchester United youngster, 20, is now back on the training field and manager Nigel Pearson hopes his competitive return is just a ‘few weeks’ away.

“It’s great to have him back out there and he’s a very infectious character,” said Pearson. ”It’s still ‘non-contact’ but he’s joining in small sided games and has been for a couple of weeks now. If you didn’t know that he has had a serious injury, you wouldn’t think he looked out of place at the minute.

“He is well on track and hopefully, within the next few weeks, we’ll see him back in a competitive environment,” Pearson added.

“It will be great to have him available because it will give us another dimension.

“We know that goals have been hard to come by but we have some good attacking options and, when Cameron is available again, he will add to the mix.”
