Paynter leaves Leeds on long Blackpool holiday

TRANSFER-LISTED Leeds United striker Billy Paynter has joined Championship rivals Blackpool on trial.

The Liverpool-born forward, placed on the transfer list at the end of last term after two frustrating seasons at Elland Road, trained with the Seasiders yesterday and is set to spend this week at the club.

Several other clubs remain interested in the 28-year-old, including Doncaster Rovers and Notts County.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Dave Jones has hailed the capture of Rangers starlet Rhys McCabe, admitting it’s a big coup for the club.

Highly-rated midfielder McCabe, 20, has agreed a three-year deal with the Owls, subject to international clearance.

Wednesday beat off interest from the top-flight to land the Scottish U21 international, one of a host of players to reject the transfer of his contract to the newco Rangers last month.

Jones said: “Rhys is an up-and-coming star and, due to the financial situation at Rangers, we have managed to bring in the boy. We are absolutely delighted.”

Meanwhile, Doncaster are poised to complete the signing of former Wednesday centre-back Rob Jones today and the Stockton-born stopper could be handed a debut in tonight’s friendly clash with Hull City at the Keepmoat Stadium if his move is completed in time.

Rovers are in the market for defenders following the departures of George Friend and Habib Beye, while Shelton Martis has yet to feature in pre-season due to injury, with boss Dean Saunders having fielded a makeshift back four in a number of the club’s friendlies so far.

Barnsley keeper Luke Steele admits he is facing a race against time to be ready for the big kick-off after suffering a setback following hernia surgery.

He said: “I’m not definitely out for the start of the season, but my chances are looking pretty slim.
