Power Rankings: The risers and fallers of Yorkshire football

Elsewhere, chaos at Elland Road has caused a huge drop for Leeds United, while there have been rises for some of Yorkshire’s League One sides.

1: Hull (up two)

Hull have been consistently inconsistent over the last six games, following every win with a draw and every draw with a win.

However, their 3-0 victory against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night means they have climbed to fourth in the Championship, a loftier perch than any other side in the county.

Ipswich are no slouches themselves, so such a dominating performance, courtesy of goals from Alex Bruce, Chuba Akpom and David Myler, can only be seen as a plus.

The task for Hull is to put a run of wins together and make a concerted tilt at the top two.

2) Sheffield Wednesday (down one)

Every time a side seems to put some results together in Yorkshire, it all comes crashing down shortly after.

Wednesday are the latest to slow down a winning streak, drawing their last two games. It seems almost as though the international break came at the wrong time for Carlos Carvalhal’s team.

The Owls have dropped down to ninth in the league thanks to the recent draws against Hull and Queens Park Rangers, and are now four points off Middlesbrough in sixth.

Fans of the Hillsborough side will be hoping Friday’s trip to Rotherham brings a win, so they can start climbing the table again.

3) Sheffield United (up three)

Good news for Sheffield United, who have come through a sticky patch to win three of their last four games.

An away trip to Oldham is never easy, but Nigel Adkins’s side came away from Boundary Park with an important point.

The 3-0 demolition of Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night also outlined the fact that United are a force to be reckoned with in the promotion race.

Having dropped to mid-table, the Blades currently sit fifth, no longer a significant distance from the top two. There’s still work to be done, but at least they are on their way.

4) Bradford City (up one)

Phil Parkinson’s side have finally started climbing the table in League One, and Tuesday night’s win against high-flying Bury bodes well for the rest of the season.

The Bantams beat the Shakers 2-1 to climb to 11th in the league.

An away win against struggling Doncaster on Saturday means Bradford have won two on the bounce, and fans will be hoping they can carry that momentum forward to a potentially tricky encounter against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Promotion has to be in the thoughts of the City hierarchy, who have been outside of the second tier for far too long now.

5) Huddersfield Town (up three)

With only one loss in their last six, things are starting to look up for Huddersfield Town.

Tuesday night’s win against MK Dons pushed the West Yorkshire side up to 13th in the table, around where they would expect to be this season.

While the result was aided by two huge defensive errors, it was good to see Nahki Wells grab his third goal of the season - if Huddersfield want to push up the table, they need goals from the previously prolific Bermudan striker.

A tough test against Derby County waits for Town on Saturday.

6) Doncaster Rovers (up five)

Finally, Doncaster.

It took Rovers an exceptional length of time to appoint a replacement for Paul Dickov, and when they did, Darren Ferguson chose to take a watching brief for the visit of Bradford City on Saturday.

That did not work, as Rob Jones fell to another loss in the last game of his interim spell in charge.

However, Ferguson took his place in the dugout on Tuesday night and will have been delighted to see Keshi Anderson bag a late winner against Shrewsbury Town.

The 2-1 win lifted Doncaster out of the bottom four, and pushed them up the power rankings.

7) Middlesbrough (down five)

Oh Middlesbrough, what’s happening?

During the international break, we spoke about the concern Aitor Karanka must have had that the loss against Reading would curtail Boro’s momentum. However, there was an assumption that it was a temporary blip.

Not so, as they’ve not won in their last two games. They were held by Fulham at home before losing 1-0 against Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

Boro are now down to sixth, further away from the automatic promotion slots which simply have to be the aim this season, given the talent in their squad.

8) Rotherham United (down one)

There was no new manager bounce for Rotherham on Saturday, as they lost 2-1 against struggling Brentford away from home.

However, Neil Redfearn did pick up his first point as manager on Tuesday night, holding Reading to a draw at home. The Royals considered by many to be one of the best sides in the second tier, making it an impressive result.

It does not get any easier for Rotherham, as they host Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

They are only two points away from the relative safety of 16th, which means a win or two could change their situation dramatically.

9) Guiseley (up three)

WLLLDD

A run of three losses in a row has been halted by Guiseley, who followed up last week’s 3-3 draw against Wrexham with a 1-1 tie against Boreham Wood on Saturday.

They are now relatively comfortable in 18th, well above the relegation zone in terms of points difference.

However, they need to start winning games again if they want to push up the table.

Unfortunately, they do not have another fixture until October, 31 in the league, which means a victory will have to wait.

10) York City (-)

York have been helped in the rankings by the generally abject displays of the teams around them.

While a 3-1 loss against Barnet at the weekend would have hampered them, they did well to draw 2-2 against Dagenham and Redbridge on Tuesday.

However, the Minstermen are precariously close to the bottom of the division, and they really need to improve on their recent record of one win in six.

Otherwise an unwanted return to non-league might become an unfortunate reality.

11) Barnsley (down seven)

Barnsley’s recent record looks significantly worse than it did last week, especially given one of their two wins in the last six was in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The league is any side’s bread and butter, and two losses in a row, against Southend United and Walsall, mean the Tykes are looking worryingly over their shoulders.

Fleetwood visit on Saturday, and Barnsley could do with a win if they want to stop thinking about a potential relegation battle.

12) FC Halifax Town (up one)

It was hard to pick 12th spot in the Yorkshire Post Power Rankings, and it seems ridiculous to hand it to Halifax after a third loss in a row.

However, at least a 2-1 loss against Chester FC is an improvement on recent weeks, when seven goals conceded have become all too normal.

Moving up a place does not mean things are going well, just that the situation seems slightly better than at the bottom club in the table.

Halifax stay 23rd, but may hope a cup tie against Guiseley will bring respite on Saturday.

13) Leeds United (down four)

No drama during the international break for Leeds, but tons after it.

The loss against Brighton on Saturday seems almost irrelevant compared to the sacking of Uwe Rosler, the sudden appointment of Steve Evans and the suspension of Massimo Cellino by the Football League.

At least the situation was improved somewhat last night, as a discussion between Cellino and Leeds Fans Utd brought an immediate lifting of the away ticket cap, which was set to be implemented for the derby against Huddersfield Town.

Evans takes his troops to Fulham on Wednesday night - if Leeds cannot halt a run of three losses in a row, things will start looking very dangerous for the Elland Road side.
