Richard Hercock: Leeds look like missing out

If I was a betting man then I would stay well clear of backing Leeds United to win promotion to the Premier League this year via the Championship play-offs.

For the Whites have tumbled out of the play-off zone, leapfrogged by Nottingham Forest, and now have just three more matches in the regular season to get back in.

And looking at the fixtures each will be tough.

First they travel to Selhurst Park today to face a Crystal Palace side battling to avoid relegation.

But look at the Eagles’ home record and they have won as many home games as Leeds this season and conceded a lot fewer goals.

Indeed, if they had a half decent away record they would be in the top half of the table.

Then comes a tough game with Burnley at Elland Road next Saturday in a game which will be screened live.

And to finish off the campaign is an away trip to runaway Championship leaders QPR.

Hull City, Millwall, Burnley and Forest are all challenging Leeds for the final play-off spot, and unless United can improve their recent form, then another season in the Championship looks on the cards for Simon Grayson’s men.
