Soccer gossip: Leeds, Terriers, Hull, Doncaster

LEEDS UNITED are waiting on a verdict regarding Honduran international Ramon Nunez, who suffered a potentially serious knee ligament injury in yesterday’s development squad game against Wigan at Elland Road.

The transfer-listed midfielder/attacker was taken off early on in United’s 3-1 win with coach Neil Redfearn fearful he will be out for a considerable period of time.

He said: “It doesn’t look good and when a player goes down like that, your initial reaction is that it could be a long time.

“If that’s the case, it’s a shame for him, but he will be assessed as to what the extent is before we find out.”

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Town full-back Paul Dixon has been drafted into the Scotland squad as cover ahead of their World Cup qualifying double-header with Serbia and Macedonia after two of Craig Levein’s defenders picked up injuries.

Both Southampton left-back Danny Fox and Norwich’s Russell Martin are out of the first game with Serbia at Hampden Park on Saturday, with uncapped Dixon called up along with MK Dons’ Gary Mackenzie.

On the domestic front, Town have hinted they may go back in for Leicester City and ex-Leeds forward Jermaine Beckford once the emergency loan market opens shortly.

Another player, Doncaster Rovers midfielder Martin Woods, is also being linked with a move once the market is open for business, with Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town being tipped to make moves.

One player already at Hillsborough on loan, QPR forward Jay Bothroyd has spoken of the debt he owes Owls boss Dave Jones after he swooped to sign him in a beat-the-deadline move on Friday.

The move sees Bothroyd link up again with Jones, who firmly got his career back on track at Cardiff City.

Bothroyd said: “I owe him (Jones) a lot. He has a been a big influence. When I went to Cardiff I had a reputation as an inconsistent journeyman. But there I made myself indispensable, played every week and scored goals.

“I was disappointed when he got the sack. He had a positive influence on me. He’s a big reason why I came here. He managed us well at Cardiff.”

Steve Bruce insists winger Cameron Stewart - who last week signed for Burnley on loan until January - could still have a future at Hull City, despite the arrivals of Stephen Quinn and Ahmed Elmohamady.

He said: “There’s no writing on the wall for him here, far from it.

“It’s something we’ll address in January. I hope he goes to Burnley and rips it up, I really do, but he just needs to play.

“Cameron’s recovered from his cruciate ligament injury (suffered in February 2011) but he still needs that confidence back. You can only get that by playing games.”
