Yorkshire Sport Special: Live from Wembley and Magic Weekend

It’s a massive day in Yorkshire sport as Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town do battle at Wembley in the League One play-off final.

The Yorkshire Post’s Richard Sutcliffe and Ian Appleyard are at Wembley and will be bringing you all the action as it happens here on the YP website.

While along the M62 in Manchester, there’s the little matter of Magic Weekend taking place as all the Super League clubs do battle today and tomorrow.

12.45pm - The day has started off well for one Yorkshireman. Tim Bresnan finished with four wickets at Trent Bridge as England finally skittled the West Indies out in the second Test. Which Yorkshire teams will cover themselves in glory today?

1.00pm - It’s the first kick-off at the Etihad Stadium as Wakefield Trinity Wildcats take on Castleford Tigers. Hull FC and Hull KR go toe-to-toe later this evening.

1.40pm - Wakefield beating Castleford 24-20 at half-time at the Etihad Stadium.

2.08pm - Team news in from Wembley... Cresswell in for Porter, Montgomery in for McDonald as Blades make two changes for play off final.

2.11pm - Town team to play Blades: Smithies, Woods, P Clarke, Morrison, Hunt, Ward, Miller, Johnson, Higginbotham, Novak, Rhodes.

2.40pm - Brilliant sunshine at Wembley makes for an amazing day. With the M1 closed earlier in the day, some fans have been held up but the crowd is building.

2.55pm - Kick-off looms. Both teams stand just 90 minutes away from promotion to the Championship. Teams introduced to dignitaries on the pitch.

3.05pm - Town started the better side, Jack Hunt looks lively, while I am always impressed by United’s Stephen Quinn.

3.09pm - Lots of empty seats which is sad, and Alex Smithies twice called into action as Richard Cresswell and Ryan Flynn threaten.

3.10pm - Result in from the Etihad Stadium.... Wakefield beat rivals Castleford 32-26 as the Magic Weekend starts with a points fest. Read Dave Craven’s match report at http://bit.ly/LmKCHo

3.30pm - Half hour gone at Wembley and neither team has really troubled the goalkeeper. Stifling temperatures mean the players even took time out for a drinks break.

3.45pm - Half-time whistle goes at Wembley. Chances at a premium? Yes, not one serious chance at either end. Not a great match for the neutral, but nervous times for Town and Blades fans - both at the stadium and sat at home.

4.03pm - At last, a goalscoring chance as Danny Ward hammers his shot against the woodwork at the start of the second half at Wembley.

4.16pm - Peter Clarke flashes a far-pots header wide from a Town corner, while Matt Lowton looks dangerous attacking down the right flank from full-back.

4.23pm - Stephen Quinn drags an effort wide for the Blades. 70 minutes gone and still to have a shot on target at either end. I have seen Town Jordan Rhodes - top marksmen in England - score four times at Hillsborough in 4-4 draw this season and Blades are division’s top scorers. Yet today neither side looks capable of even scoring one. Amazing.

4.37pm - At last the match comes alive on 83 minutes. Town will be kicking themselves as chances for Peter Clarke and Tommy Miller go begging. Chris Porter on for Richard Cresswell.

4.48pm - No goals after 90 minutes. Extra-time now at Wembley, and if needed penalties.

6.00pm - No goals in extra-time so it came down to penalties. And even then it went to the wire, leaving the goalkeepers to take the decisive spot-kicks. Alex Smithies netted, Steve Simonsen missed and promotion was Town’s.

Another disappointing play-off final for the Blades, and a long and weary trek back to South Yorkshire. As for Huddersfield, well done Lee Clark and Simon Grayson, as Town head back to the Championship next season.

7.00pm - Over at the Etihad there’s another ‘little’ derby goin on, as Hull FC play Hull KR in rugby league’s Magic Weekend. Just kicked off. Earlier, Warrington thrashed Widnes 68-4.

7.54pm - Hull FC are beating their city rivals Hull KR 18-12 at half-time. Shock news today too that Huddersfield’s Kevin Brown is to join Widnes next season.

10.00pm - Just about have enough energy to tell you David Hodgson grabbed a late winner to give Hull KR a narrow 32-30 win over Hull FC to end the Magic Weekend’s first day on a moment of drama. Good night. Enjoy your evening.
