Leeds United transfer news: Whites could struggle to keep first team talent, Elland Road flop in 'big trouble'

Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa have established themselves as a hive of exciting young talent.

When Niall Huggins was brought on for his debut during the recent 4-2 defeat to Arsenal, he became the 21st player aged 21 or under to be handed his debut by the Argentine boss since he arrived at Elland Road.

One of the chief shining lights among the Whites' promising contingent has been Pascal Struijk.

The versatile talent has already racked up 16 appearances in the Premier League already this term, filling in at the heart of defence and as cover for Kalvin Phillips at the base of midfield.

According to a report from continental title De Telegraaf earlier this week, his performances are attracting attention from a number of clubs, with Leicester City and Napoli both said to be keen on the player.

Subsequent claims from Belgian publication HLN seemingly suggested that there was little truth in the Foxes' purported interest, but at the very least, the Serie A club are said to be circling, and that could be problematic for Leeds, according to pundit Kevin Campbell.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “This is where the vultures start to circle and want to pick apart that Leeds squad because they’ve done really well.

“Can they fend it off? I’m sure they have the financial power but the difficulty is that Struijk or other players might look at going to other clubs because they see more opportunity there.

“Leicester have been doing really well. It’s Leeds’ first season back in the Premier League and bigger clubs will be sniffing about.”

According to Whoscored, Struijk has been the eighth-highest rated player in Bielsa’s squad this term, and his performances have earned him high praise from the likes of Dominic Matteo, who has heaped plaudits on the youngster.

He said: “I look at where Struijk is and positionally he’s good.

“He reads the game a lot better than he’s credited for. He’ll get even better too. Struijk is one to look out for.

“There’s plenty of work to be done but, with the size of him, his physicality, his passing, he’s got it all and can step into midfield.

“He looks very calm on the ball, players who are a bit erratic are not for me but he looks comfortable in possession.”

Elsewhere, Elland Road flop Jean-Kevin Augustin is having a miserable time of things at new club Nantes.

The striker managed just 48 minutes of action during his stint in Yorkshire, and he's not faring much better in Ligue 1.

In fact, his manager, Antoine Kombouaré, has taken the decision to banish him to the reserve team for the rest of the season.

He told L’Equipe: “To my great regret for Jean-Kévin, he isn’t ready, and he won’t be tomorrow either because he’s so far behind.

“Because I don’t have time, I decided to put an end to it. After that, is he capable of coming back? That’s another question.

“Today, he’s out of the professional group because I need a tight one, players 100% ready physically and mentally.

"It’s also a decision I took for him to look at himself. He really needs to understand that he’s in big trouble.”
