Macclesfield Town 0 Rotherham United 2: Rare goals are enough for Millers to sit second

ROTHERHAM retained second place in League Two with goals from a couple of players who rarely figure in the scoring charts.

Midfielder Jason Taylor put them in front in the first half with only his second goal of the season and the win was sealed a few minutes from time when central defender Nick Fenton scored his first goal for two years.

"It was an excellent win and it was an important one because we wanted to build on the victory over Port Vale on Saturday," said Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore. "We had to fight hard for it but we defended superbly, particularly from long throws."

Rotherham might easily have been behind in only the second minute. Left-back Tom Newey sent a header straight into the path of Tyrone Barnett but with goalkeeper Andy Warrington well off his line, the Macclesfield striker lobbed his effort over the bar.

Rotherham took the lead after 28 minutes with an excellent goal.

Winger Marcus Marshall ran 60 yards before finding Adam Le Fondre on the right and his centre saw midfielder Jason Taylor time his run perfectly before rocketing a header high into the net.

The Millers defended solidly in the second half as Macclesfield threw evertything at them, although Marshall might have extended the lead before Fenton popped up in the penalty area to fire home six minutes from time.
