Matthew Pennington extends his stay at Hull City

Hull City have extended Matthew Pennington’s loan until the end of the season but although they are expected to do the same with Barnsley’s Mallik Wilks, they are unlikely to trigger their option to make the deal permanent.

An undisclosed fee has been agreed for the former Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers forward to move from Oakwell, but it has to be triggered by June 30. With the Championship season set to be extended until July 22, neither Hull nor Barnsley know what division they will be playing in next season.

There is also considerable financial uncertainty throughout the Football League. The nine remaining rounds of 2019-20 fixtures will be played behind closed doors, depriving clubs of much-needed matchday revenue, and it is impossible to second-guess when fans will be allowed back into grounds.

The Reds are bottom of the Championship, with a seven-point gap to safety. The Tigers are two points above the relegation zone and will drop into it if they lose their first game back, at home to Charlton Athletic.

A permanent transfer could still be negotiated at the end of the season, with Wilks not part of coach Gerhard Struber’s Barnsley plans. Since joining Hull in January, he has scored three goals in nine appearances. He also impressed on loan at Doncaster last season, under coach Grant McCann, who moved to the KCOM Stadium in the summer.

Earlier in the week it was confirmed Josh Bowler’s loan had been extended, and now his Everton team-mate Pennington has done likewise.

Defender Pennington, who had a season-long loan at Leeds in 2017-18, has started 10 games for the Tigers, eight in the league.

Hull are also hopeful loanees Herbie Kane and Marcus Maddison will see out the season with them. Maddison’s Peterborough United contract is due to expire at the end of the month.
