The 29-year-old is now expected to head straight back out on loan to Coventry City.

James, 29, has been a vital cog of the Reds’ upturn under Valerien Ismael, with his loan - his second at Oakwell - expiring following Saturday’s 1-0 Championship loss at Norwich City.

The Lancastrian played 15 times for the Reds and revealed his hopes that he would be able to remain at the club for the rest of the season when speaking to the media just before Christmas.

It was a hope that was echoed by Ismael.

But James will not return for a third spell in South Yorkshire at Barnsley, who are in the market to bring in some new signings this month with Liam Kitching and Carlton Morris being two targets.

Chief Executive Officer Dane Murphy said: “I cannot overstate the gratitude I have for all that Matty has done for the club in the first half of the season.

“His ability, character, and leadership have impacted the squad in a way that cannot be quantified. He will be missed at every level and I am happy that he has been able to prove he is still an elite player.

“This club has an excellent reputation of developing young talent and now some have an opportunity to prove themselves as we continue to push up the Sky Bet Championship table.

“Once again, I’d like to place on record my sincerest thanks to Matty and wish him all the best in the future.”
