McCombe targets title on Huddersfield Town return

Huddersfield Town defender Jamie McCombe is setting his sights on the League One title after returning from a loan spell at Preston North End.

McCombe, who scored in the Terriers’ weekend victory over Brentford, believes that leaders Charlton Athletic can still be caught depsite holding a seven-point advantage.

“Of course we can get to the top but we can only affect the games we play in,” he said. “It happened last season when we went on a 27-game unbeaten run and Southampton matched us. It’s nice to get in the winning habit and kick on and hopefully we will be in the top two at the end of the season.”

Town winger Gary Roberts undegoes a hernia operation today and will be sidelined for over a month but McCombe believes Town have the strength in depth to cope.

“We are going to miss Gary but we have experienced players to come in such as Danny Cadamarteri, Donal McDermott and Danny Ward, who is flying at the moment,” he said. “When one person goes out, someone else has to fill their boots and that’s one thing we have got at Huddersfield – strength in depth – in terms of the squad, plus senior players with experience. It is squads which win the league so it should stand us in good stead.”
