Middlesbrough 2 Huddersfield 0: Powell pleased with Terriers’ response

The 26-year-old bagged his third and fourth goals of the season as Huddersfield’s 29-year wait for win on Teesside continued.

Boro wasted a glut of chances before Tomlin drilled home a brilliant effort just after the hour.

Former Boro man Jacob Butterfield forced a great save from Dimi Konstantopoulos, and the Greek goalkeeper twice denied forward Nahki Wells with two late saves.

But as the Terriers pushed for a leveller, throwing goalkeeper Alex Smithies up for a late corner, Boro cleared and enabled Tomlin to make sure of the three points with the last kick of the game.

Huddersfield’s away form remains a major concern for manager Chris Powell, but he was encouraged by the way his side responded to going behind.

“It was the sort of away performance that I’ve been looking for,” he said.

“Once they got the first goal, we opened up and took the game to Middlesbrough. The response was excellent.

“We hit the post, their keeper made two very good saves, another was cleared off the line and on another day we could have had a penalty.

“The result was tough to take against a side with ambitions to go up. They have good players and have spent good money, but we more than matched them. On another day we could have had a point.

“It’s good that we know we can match teams in this league and can also play good football and create chances.

“We really need to get that away result. It would help us becasue our home form has been good, so it’s about getting the two things together.”
