Middlesbrough sign Jordan Archer as Dejan Stojanovic leaves for Germany

MIDDLESBROUGH have made their first signing of the January window by bringing in former Millwall keeper Jordan Archer on a short-term deal for the rest of the season following Dejan Stojanovic's loan move to German club FC St Pauli for the remainder of 2020-21.

Archer, 27, arrived after a spell in Scotland with Motherwell.

On moving to Boro, Archer said: "I've been following the Championship this season and the boys here have been doing fantastic.

"With the addition of the gaffer here it made it pretty much impossible to turn down.

"I know a few of the boys here, and all the things you hear are good. I got a phone call from the gaffer a few days ago as well which has made the transition really easy.

"I'm grateful to have played a lot of games in the Championship. Betts [Marcus Bettinelli] has been doing a fantastic job, I've worked with him at Fulham and he's a great keeper. I can add some competition and if I do get an opportunity hopefully I can take it.

"I'm really looking forward to getting in amongst it."

Stojankovic, 27, who joined the Teessiders in the last January transfer window from Swiss outfit St Gallen for a £1m fee, has not featured for the club since appearing in the 4-3 EFL Cup win against Shrewsbury Town at the start of September and been under-study to Marcus Bettinelli, who joined the club on a season-long loan from Fulham.

The Austria was replaced by youngster Sol Brynn for the weekend win at Wycombe and has now joined St Pauli, second from bottom of the 2 Bundesliga.

Stojanovic - who made his debut in Boro's 1-0 win at Charlton last March in the club's final game before lockdown - has made eight appearances for the club and started seven games for the Riverside Stadium outfit after football's resumption to finish off the curtailed 2019-20 season in the summer of 2020.
