Millwall v Sheffield United: Moore is handed the gloves for Blades bow

Moore, 26, has dropped down to League One to try and get first-team football after struggling for opportunities at Cardiff, where David Marshall is No 1. Moore featured just 25 times for City in three seasons.

He is likely to replace George Long today, as manager Chris Wilder looks to gain United’s first win of the campaign.

Moore said: “I am delighted to be here. I just want to concentrate on playing football now, my opportunities having been limited over the last couple of years at Cardiff.

“I was unfortunate to be behind David Marshall, who is the best goalkeeper in the Championship, and was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League when he played there. When the chance to come to a club like Sheffield United came about, it was too good to turn down.”

United have paid Cardiff an undisclosed fee – reported to rise to £500,000, including add-ons – for the former Brentford goalkeeper, who has signed a three-year deal.

Wilder hopes Moore’s arrival will also provide good competition for Long, saying: “I’ve said for a while, competition is key and Simon will provide that in the goalkeeping department.

“We’ve tracked him for quite a while, done due diligence with people that have worked with him. We have taken our time to get the right one.

“Simon is a good age, he’s got experience. We’ve got good value, too, it is a good deal for Sheffield United and now it is up to him to produce the performances we know he is capable of.”

United have picked up just one point from their opening three games, a 1-1 draw with Rochdale and defeats against Bolton Wanderers and Southend United.
