MK Dons 1 Sheffield Wednesday 4: Mellor heroics ensure Owls maintain improvement

ALAN IRVINE has backed Neil Mellor to continue delivering the goods after his second hat-trick in three games sealed a superb win at MK Dons.

The in-form striker scored all three with his head and set Wednesday on their way to a 4-1 hammering and give them their fourth win in a row.

And with the games coming thick and fast at the moment Irvine reckons there's more to come from the frontman who also bagged three against Hartlepool a week-and-a-half ago.

"He's doing all the work to get himself the chances," said Irvine. "His effort, the running and the fact he is working hard to get into positions are giving him the opportunties. And he's a really good finisher and if he keeps up that effort and application there are more goals to come."

Irvine described his side as magnificent after the result, picking out debutant goalkeeper Arron Jameson for particular praise after he came in for the injured Nicky Weaver. But he said he's hopeful his No1 might make the home clash with Walsall tomorrow.

"I'm hoping the progress he makes continues and then he'll have a chance," said Irvine.

Giles Coke also returns from suspension and Jermaine Johnson should also be back to fitness for the clash. Their returns giving Irvine a welcome headache.

"It's great isn't! It's absolutely terrific to have these sorts of problems. It's a lot better when you are trying to chose a team from a whole load of people that are playing well than not playing well," said the Owls boss.

He said his side won't be affected by the club's off-field problems.

"We don't talk about it in the dressing room as it's not

something we can control," said Irvine.
