Last weekend’s defeat at home to Dover left the Minstermen in 17th place and already eight points adrift of the play-offs.

That wasn’t what was expected when York kicked off their first season at this level for five years and Jackie McNamara knows his side will be in for a battle against in-form Barrow.

“It will be similar to the first game of the season when there were lots of long throws and second balls to win,” said the Scot.

“They have a style of play and get the ball forward early. They are direct and concentration will be key. We have to stand up to it.

“If we do things properly we can cause them problems.”

Fraser Murdoch has joined York following a trial that included a two-goal appearance for the reserves at home to Chesterfield.

The 20-year-old striker was released by Crewe Alexandra at the end of last season.

North Ferriby United, meanwhile, host Southport having slipped into the relegation zone for the first time this season.

With the Sangrounders sitting below the Villagers, this is a big change to return to winning ways but manager Steve Housham is keen not to build up the fixture too much.

He said: “I am the kind of manager who doesn’t want to put too much pressure on them to win games like this, all I am wanting is for them to perform to their best.

“I believe too much pressure can make players hide and not play as well.”

Leeds United loanee Billy Whitehouse could be handed a debut for Guiseley when Macclesfield Town visit Nethermoor today.

It follows the appointment of Adam Lockwood as permanent manager in succession to Mark Bower.
