The Sheffield-born former manager has been promoted eight times, an English football record, and earned some of those successes in his home county, taking Scarborough, Huddersfield and the Blades up a division during his time with each club.
Warnock was on course to hit the unique 1,500-match landmark before parting company with Cardiff in November, three years after joining the club, where he earned promotion to the Premier League before an immediate return to the Championship.

"It would be a great achievement to get to 1,500 but I can't see it happening unless it is the end of the season somewhere and someone asks me to help them out," Warnock told the BBC's Friday Football Social.
"I have really enjoyed what I have been doing and it is just nice to wake up and not have the problems with 25 kids - it is like looking after 25 kids in management!"

Rotherham were six points from safety with 16 games to go in the Championship but lost only five of their games under Warnock to stay up.
Despite the 71-year-old earning promotion eight times as a manager he insists surviving with Rotherham is one of his proudest achievements.
"I went to Rotherham and that was unbelievable," he added.

"Those lads will remember those 16 games and that is as good as an achievement as I have had."
Warnock can sit back proudly on his career after achieving the three things he set out to do when he was he started out in management with Gainsborough Trinity.

"I managed to achieve all them. It would have been nice to stay up at Cardiff, we were given a few raw deals in the second half of the season.
"The main thing is that the majority of the fans who have been with my teams will have enjoyed it.
"I am really proud to get those eight promotions and I would have liked to have got to 1,500 games but 1,488 is not a bad go."
