The Teessider, 29, joined the club following his release from Blackburn Rovers earlier this summer - signing a two-year deal.

Smallwood was an ever-present member of the Rovers side who were automatically promoted from League One after finishing runners-up in 2017-18.

He was also promoted from the third tier via the play-offs with the Millers in 2013-14 and is now eyeing a hat-trick in the amber and black of Hull.

On handing Smallwood the armband, Tigers head coach Grant McCann said: “Richie is a leader. His experience is hugely valuable and how he handles himself on and off the pitch.

"We brought him to the club because of what he’s done already at this level, promotions with Blackburn and Rotherham.

"I have watched him very carefully since he’s come in and the way he goes about his job every single day is a pleasure to see.

"The lad is a warrior, he wants to win every single day in training, and he will guide the rest of this group."
