Notts County v Huddersfield Town: Town chief Clark attacks defence

LEE CLARK has warned his Huddersfield Town defence to improve or risk being axed.

Last Friday’s 1-1 draw at home to Carlisle United means the Terriers have kept just one clean sheet in eight games.

Clark was particularly scathing about the lapse in concentration that allowed the Cumbrians to go ahead early on through Liam Noble as the Town defence was cut open by a slick passing move.

Ahead of today’s trip to Notts County, Clark said: “The goal we gave away (against Carlisle) was shocking. Teams who have aspirations to win championships don’t give goals like that away.

“We are kamikaze at times at the back with some of the situations we put ourselves in. We keep working on it in training but if they keep making those mistakes then we will have to look at it.

“None of the players who have had opportunities at centre-back can’t say they have not had a fair crack of the whip.”

Clark was forced into a reshuffle ahead of the draw against Carlisle – a result that following Saturday’s games saw Town end 2011 in fifth place – by Leeds United’s late recall of Alex Bruce.

The defender had started Huddersfield’s last three games and Clark has not ruled out making a permanent move for a player who is out of favour at Elland Road.

He said: “It was a shock and an inconvenience when Alex was recalled. I had my team line-up but then got the call on Thursday afternoon.

“Leeds had had a few issues with centre-backs and needed him back.

“I felt Alex had improved with every game with us as his fitness improved. He was outstanding against Chesterfield.”

Danny Cadamarteri could retain his place on the right wing today after being drafted in for a first start since March against Carlisle. Danny Ward was not injured, Clark instead saying the wideman had to improve his form.
