Paul Heckingbottom reveals how red-carded Alex Mowatt apologised to Barnsley teammates

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom acknowledged that new signing Alex Mowatt deserved a red card for a crude lunge in the 3-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday night.

Mowatt was dismissed 41 minutes into his Barnsley career - after signing from Leeds United this week - after a late challenge on Jack Price.

Wolves were 2-0 up at the time through goals from Kortney Hause and David Edwards, and added a third through Edwards in the second half.

Marc Roberts scored a consolation for the Reds who also saw Heckingbottom sent to the stands after an ugly scuffle with the Wolves dugout midway through the second half.

Heckingbottom said: "It wasn't our night and I am disappointed that we conceded the first two goals like that - and it gave us a mountain to climb. And then the sending off, so then the game was all but over by then.

"The naivety has cost us. I can accept conceding a goal from a set-play, but Edwards made the same run for the first three and got every header. That's why we lost. It showed me that we weren't right tonight and we can't keep conceding goals like that."

On Mowatt's dismissal, for a crude lunge on Jack Price, Heckingbottom said: "I have not seen it again, but on first look it did look like a red card - Alex has been poor there and let us down.

"He apologised straight away at half-time. He was up for it, but he's just gone over the edge a little bit."

On his own misdemeanour, he added: "The ball's gone in the dugout and (Josh) Scowen's gone to get it and they've kept hold of the ball and I was trying to make sure he didn't lose his head.

"It was disappointing from them. I'm probably the only one who doesn't moan about them and gets sent off."
