Paul Warne praises goalkeeping input of Viktor Johansson and Josh Vickers at Rotherham United

CONTRIBUTIONS in Rotherham United’s uplifting opening to the Championship season have arrived from across the board.

While the likes of Chiedozie Ogbene, Richard Wood and Dan Barlaser have taken centre stage, the reassuring presence of a strong last line of defence is Viktor Johansson is something not lost upon manager Paul Warne.

Neither is the fact that he is being pushed on a daily basis by Josh Vickers.

Last season, the pair shared duties between the posts en route to helping the Millers secure a third successive return to the Championship under Warne.

Johansson led the way with 26 league appearances, but Vickers was not far behind with 20.

While the former is currently in the box seat and has started the campaign well, the fact that another senior option in Vickers is waiting in the wings is also consequential.

Warne, who also recently brought in young custodian Robbie Henfrey to work with the duo, said: "They (Johansson and Vickers) are really good, close and pleased for each other when the other does well.

"Viktor has started the season really well. Josh was injured and Viktor has done well and long may it continue. There’ll be no complaints from Josh.

"Josh knows he will get the chance if Viktor's performances drop, but at the moment, they push each other on.

"They are 'my' goalkeepers, so to speak and I'd like to keep both of them if that is something we can do.

"Before, we usually had loan ones (keepers), so you are always panicking that you are going to lose them in January.

"I think a team is built on a good number one. From the games already this season, we have been really competitive in all of the matches.

"But there has been times where our goalkeeper has had to dig us out and that is always going to be the case.

"If you don't have a good number one, you are snookered behind the black before you start."

The Millers will be backed by a sell-out away contingent in their derby at Sheffield United on Saturday.
