Plymouth 3 Sheffield Wednesday 2: Irvine blasts poor defending

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY substitute Tommy Miller's imperious 75th-minute strike failed to inspire a win against Plymouth Argyle who had been reduced to 10 men for the second half.

Miller controlled a bouncing ball before sending a long-range half-volley flying over outstretched Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu into the top corner to make it 2-2 at sun-kissed Home Park.

But Wednesday conceded two minutes later as pint-sized Craig Noone was allowed room to head home at the far post.

The Owls slipped to 11th in the table and now bid to stem a three-match losing sequence at home to struggling Southampton on Saturday.

Defeat left Wednesday boss Alan Irvine "hugely disappointed".

He said: "The defending was unacceptable. We have come back from being a goal down twice and we've immediately given ourselves a problem by conceding a third.

"You can't knock off like we did. It was really poor defending to allow the crosses to come in the first place and to defend against the cross.

"The crazy thing is that we told them that Noone would have a spring at the far post because we have seen it on video clips. It shouldn't be a surprise at all.

"People sometimes wonder if you prepare players too much, I don't see how you can, because if we don't show them it and he scores by getting over the top of somebody at the far post, then you probably look at yourself and say 'we should have told them'.

"It's difficult to be positive about anything at this moment because of the way the result went and the goals we conceded.

"Of course there are always some positives and Tommy Miller's goal was absolutely fantastic. James O'Connor got a goal as well on coming back into the team."

Argyle had taken the lead when Bradley Wright-Phillips teed up Carl Fletcher to crack in a 20-yard angled drive in the 19th minute.

Recalled Owls midfielder O'Connor powered a 38th-minute header past Larrieu to level just before half time.

O'Connor's well-taken goal was made easier by a superbly delivered cross from the left corner by full-back Tommy Spurr.

Spurr dug the ball out from the touchline after being sent away down the wing.

Argyle were down to 10 men when right-back Bondz N'Gala tangled with Owls attacker Neil Mellor in a one-on-one break and was subsequently dismissed by match referee Andy Penn.

Wednesday were stunned when Wright-Phillips headed Argyle back in front from Noone's left-wing cross in the first Argyle attack of the second half.
