Points deduction cases mean Barnsley FC will fight to end: Adam Murray

BARNSLEY assistant head coach Adam Murray says that the Reds are not giving up their Championship fight - mindful of points deductions for Wigan Athletic and potentially Sheffield Wednesday which could change the picture at the bottom of the table.

The Oakwell outfit moved a step closer to a return to the third tier following Thursday's unfortunate 1-0 defeat at Leeds United, with the Reds five points adrift of safety with two games to go.

But there could yet be a late twist in the relegation fight, with Wigan set to be docked 12 points for entering administration - although they have lodged an appeal, while the Owls are awaiting to hear the verdict from the EFL regarding their misconduct charge.

If they are found guilty of breaching the English Football League's Profit and Sustainability laws, Wednesday - currently in 15th place and 11 points above the drop zone - could be handed a hefty points penalty to propel them into the relegation mix.

On a bizarre situation, Murray said: "To be where we are in the season now and to not know the black and white of the situation is strange, to put it nicely.

"For everyone's sake, going into the last two games, we need to know where we stand, especially for the clubs in hand.

"It has been one of the strangest seasons we have all been through in terms of the football and media side. Nothing surprises me at the minute.

"It is one of those situations where the whole season has been weird in many aspects and it is only right that it finishes in a weird manner.

"We do not know what is going on with Sheffield Wednesday yet and obviously the Wigan situation is what it is. But ultimately their situations are not going to affect us if we do not put points on the board.

"We need to win two games and that is our only focus at the minute."

Pledging the Reds - who host Nottingham Forest on Sunday before ending the season at Brentford next Wednesday - will fight on, he added: "The big thing for us is that we represent a town that is hard-working and grafts for everything it gets and is very passionate.

"For us, to go out and put performances in and not representing or showing that is us doing a disservice that is not going to handle.

"We might have fallen short in some aspects this season, but fight and desire is one that we have never fallen short on and that will not change."
