The off-colour Blades head to the Keepmoat Stadium fully conscious that the clock is ticking regarding their hopes of hauling themselves firmly into the promotion picture, with manager Nigel Adkins also under the microscope after a run of one win in their past six League One outings which sees them currently reside in a modest 11th place.

Rovers, who head into the game with their own pressing need for a victory – having not won in their past five matches –and Ferguson believes that a positive start is pivotal.

Ferguson, who welcomes back Nathan Tyson, Andy Butler and Thorsten Stuckmann tomorrow, said: “Certainly, I think the opening period will be important because there’s no question there’s an element of nerves in their team.

“We have to start the game right. Whenever we had gone ahead, I think there’s only one game we haven’t won which is Burton, which is a good stat.”

Acknowledging the fact that the weight of expectation on the Blades shoulders could currently be seen as an oppressive force, he added: “I suppose it could. I think when you have clubs of that size and stature in our league, the one key thing is that you have got to have the expectations to handle that. The expectations on Sheffield United in League One would be to get promoted. I don’t think that would be a surprise to anyone really.

“But I just concentrate on what we do.”

Adkins, keen to boost his options in the loan market, is steadfastly keeping focus despite the Blades’ lacklustre recent run and the increased scrutiny on him from fans. He insists he retains the support of the club’s board despite a campaign which has been somewhat underwhelming, with much to do in the final third of the season.

He said: “I have got a three-year contract and I must say that both owners have been very, very supportive.

“I have been employed because I have got a track record. If there’s a change to bring somebody else in – are we going to be in exactly the same situation? You need a period of time to work through it. But it is about results.”
