Power Rankings: Managerless Barnsley move top of the pile in Yorkshire

The Tykes would have probably kept Lee Johnson after he helped them reach Wembley, while Neil Redfearn left after the Millers dropped into the relegation zone.

1) Barnsley (+1)

Last week may have seen Barnsley draw a game in 90 minutes, their only result that was not a victory in their last six, but they did progress after penalties.

The Tykes are eagerly anticipating a trip to Wembley, although they will do so without the head coach who took them there - Lee Johnson.

Johnson has left for the greener grass of Bristol City, but Barnsley showed they did not miss him on Sunday.

Bury were the victims, falling to a 3-0 defeat as Barnsley won their seventh league game on the spin.

2) Sheffield Wednesday (+3)

Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is generally a sign of a team that might do something.

That is what Sheffield Wednesday achieved on Saturday.

They had a problem. They were 1-0 down against Birmingham. Gary Hooper provided the solution, scoring two goals in three minutes to turn the tie on its head and secure three points.

Back up to sixth, Wednesday are understandably back up our rankings.

3) Hull City (-2)

Defeat against Burnley was something of a hammerblow for Hull, who had previously won six games on the spin.

It was particularly disheartening because of the fact that Burnley are the side most likely to involve themselves in the automatic promotion conversation.

The gap between Hull and Burnley is now only one point.

Our aim for the Tigers? Really create a gap between themselves and the lottery of the play-offs.

4) FC Halifax Town (-1)

A postponement at the weekend means Halifax have not played since we last looked at their situation.

Their FA Trophy match against Chester FC has been rearranged for Wednesday evening.

5) Middlesbrough (-1)

LWLLDD

The arrival of Jordan Rhodes did not give Middlesbrough the immediate helping hand that they might have wanted on Saturday.

Form had dropped off but Rhodes did not start, Aitor Karanka choosing to use his new charge from the bench.

It meant they could only draw 1-1 against Rhodes’s former side Blackburn.

However, on Tuesday he had a telling impact against MK Dons. In the last minute, with Middlesbrough behind, he headed home to earn a draw.

It may not have been a perfect result, but it could be the sort to kickstart Boro’s season.

6) Guiseley (+3)

Conceding a late goal against Dover Athletic in the last minute on Saturday will have been a blow for Guiseley.

However, it only meant they came away from the south coast with a draw and a replay to play, which Mark Bower would probably have taken before the game.

A postponement on Tuesday means they do not know if they will progress or not.

But there are already dreams of Wembley at Guiseley.

7) Leeds United (-1)

Ah, the Leeds United gambit - win, win well and then lose almost immediately.

As their anthem goes, Leeds have had a season of ups and downs. Unfortunately each down feels much worse than each up.

The latest was the 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The disappointment at the defeat and the style of it was clear afterwards.

Leeds require some serious surgery ahead of next season. Unfortunately, we said the same prior to January.

8) Huddersfield Town (-1)

The Wagner revolution has slowed down since the high point of late December.

Victories are harder to come by, and the Terriers have lost four games on the spin.

Fortunately the relegation zone is probably too far away to worry about, but this slump will be worrying.

Town collapsed to lose 2-1 in the last 10 minutes against Preston on Saturday, a disappointing outcome to a game that had promised much.

9) Doncaster Rovers (-1)

The postponement of Saturday’s game against Scunthorpe means Doncaster have not played since last week’s rankings.

10) York City (=)

DLLDWL

York City have found it hard to string results together this season, which explains their position at the bottom of the Football League.

They followed their 2-1 win against Stevenage with a 2-0 loss against Northampton.

Unfortunately for York, they are now four points adrift with Hartlepool in 22nd holding three games in-hand on them.

The Minstermen need to start winning soon if they want to stay in League Two.

11) Sheffield United (=)

A bad transfer window followed by a bad result – things are not peachy at Bramall Lane.

For a club that was expected to challenge for automatic promotion, 11th place in League One is not good enough.

There is now talk emanating from the club that they might focus on players that are out of contract.

That would be disappointing for any fan of the Blades to hear. It is looking like a disappointing season for Nigel Adkins’s side.

12) Bradford City (=)

WLDLWL

Bradford lost 3-1 to Burton Albion this weekend, but there are caveats to that defeat.

The most obvious is that Burton look nailed on to climb out of League One this season.

However, most fans of the Bantams will see their season slipping away slightly.

Results need to turn around soon if Phil Parkinson wants to achieve what he has managed every season at Valley Parade - an improved finish on the campaign before.

13) Rotherham United (=)

Another disappointing defeat at the weekend against Bolton put Rotherham into the relegation spots.

Even worse, Neil Redfearn departed the club on Monday after a board meeting.

The long-term project that he was brought in to oversee is over.

Rotherham’s next appointment has to be the right one, or League One could beckon.
