Preston North End v Rotherham United - Only a striker would tempt Paul Warne into free agent market

That’s the message from Millers manager Paul Warne, who will monitor the free agent market to see if anything transpires.

As it stands, Rotherham are in a fairly healthy place.

But with a gruelling schedule ahead, Warne is aware that some untimely injury blows could change his thinking – certainly if his striking options are hit.

On the free agent market, he said: “I am not actively open to it; I am just not closed to it. If something came in front of me that I thought would really improve us, then I would do it.

“My only fear is that with the free agent market, a few of them have been without a club since the summer. We train and play at such an intensity and I just don’t think an experienced 32-year-old who hasn’t played football for six months would be able to get into shape for us to play with three months left.

“But I wouldn’t rule out anything. We have got three strikers and sometimes I play with two up. So I would look at a striker. Out of all the risks, a striker is probably the lesser of the risk because you can get an experienced striker in and you can play him for 20 minutes there; half an hour here.

“The way my midfielders play, if I brought someone in who hadn’t played for six months, it would be physical suicide. The same with the wing-backs, so it would realistically be an attacking option.”

The Millers bump into a familiar face in ex-loanee Daniel Iversen today and Warne says he will be pleased to catch up with him, but not witness his talent.

Warne added: “Dan played a massive part in our successful season last year. He is a really nice lad. You would definitely have a coffee and a chat with him.

“We used to give him time off for international breaks and he would go home and go fishing with his dad.

“He is a really chilled out good human and I think his career will go from strength to strength.”
