PREVIEW Huddersfield Town v Millwall: Clark believes Town have character for screen test

LEE CLARK is relishing the task which will face his Huddersfield Town side should they reach the play-offs even though they have yet to defeat any of their top six rivals this season.

Of their challengers, however, only leaders Norwich have won at the Galpharm Stadium although two home games remain against top-six opposition, starting with tonight's visit of a Millwall side who are just one point behind second-placed Leeds.

"This top-six stat does not bother me because I know my players will rise to the occasion," said Clark, whose side can, with a win tonight, go six points clear of seventh-placed Colchester, who travel to Town for the penultimate game of the campaign.

"I'm very confident we can do well against Millwall because I know that we should have beaten all the top teams this season. Anyone who sees the games properly knows we should have beat Leeds, Norwich, Swindon, and Charlton, though, in hindsight, that was probably a fair result because we didn't perform brilliantly but we had opportunities to win.

"Even in the away games we should have got something at Norwich, we should have beat Charlton, and Swindon was a game that was decided by the conditions when we had the gale-force winds. Millwall were the only team that we didn't deserve anything from where they gave us a proper going over."

Looking to cement a play-off place over the last four games, Clark adds: "I'm prepared to do whatever it takes. If it comes quickly then that will be great. If I have to go to injury time in the last match to reach our goal then I am prepared for that situation but my main focus is Friday's game and getting the result that will get us closer to our aim."

Squad strength could be key to the run-in, admits Clark, who will be without midfield link man Michael Collins for the last four regular season games after having undergone an operation on a finger which he shattered against Brentford.

Tom Clarke is also likely to deputise at right-back again for ankle victim Lee Peltier tonight and Clarke said: "Having a strong squad is massively important. I've said all along that the players outside the starting XI are the most important people because they have to keep themselves spiritually up and physically up as well because when they get that opportunity they have to be ready to take it."

One thing Clark will not question is the character of his players, which was underlined on Tuesday when they let slip a 2-0 lead against 10-man Walsall to go 3-2 behind before winning it in stoppage time with goals from returning duo Antony Kay and striker Lee Novak.

"Character comes from the person within. It's how you channel it in the right manner that counts," said Clark. "They showed unbelievable character on Tuesday because even I had written off the game at one stage. I don't blame those fans who headed for the exits when we went behind but the players showed unbelievable desire and determination."

Clark still had a warning for his players going into tonight's game – not to try to become television stars.

The match is being shown live on Sky and Town's last screening produced a 6-0 Saturday lunchtime win against Wycombe.

"It's a big game no matter who the opposition are. It doesn't bother me that it is on television but sometimes players get a little bit excited because they are on TV and they start playing for themselves. They start trying to show everybody watching what a great player they are and not what a great team they can be.

"We have to make sure the players realise that and forget about what's going on around them.

"They have to treat it as just another game and if they do then they will end up doing their job in the best possible way they can. That's when you show how good a player you are in a team game."

Of Kenny Jackett's visitors, who have lost just once in their last 19 games and who are out to atone for losing in last season's play-off final, Clark added: "It's

a massive game because it's another game to win. Millwall have built a squad over two or three years to become one of the main forces in the league.

"They are on a great run but all good runs have to come to end sometime and we hope that will be on Friday night."
