Reading 4 Doncaster Rovers 3: O'Driscoll unhappy at Rovers' defence

DONCASTER manager Sean O'Driscoll was disappointed with his side's defending after coming out second best in their seven-goal thriller at Reading.

Matt Mills gave Reading an early lead but then goals from James Hayter, Shelton Martis and Dean Shiels put Doncaster 3-1 up.

On the hour Jem Karacan pulled one back for Reading, Ian Harte levelled from a free-kick and with three minutes to go Simon Church hit Reading's winner to round off an astonishing comeback.

O'Driscoll said, "We didn't defend well enough for the whole 90 minutes but when you are 3-1 up you think you will get something out of the game.

"We made too many mistakes and that's the annoying thing. You coach them as a group in the week to show them what they have done wrong but then they either don't bother or don't understand and make the same mistakes again. They don't take it on board as a group or individuals.

"Good football means you have got to defend as well and I don't think we defended well enough. Their keeper (Adam Federici) kicks a good ball but what happens after that is vital and we made poor decisions.

"When we sorted it out in the second half they brought someone else on and that changes things. Then we had to decide whether we continued to drop off or got close but they just carried on the same.

"Reading have a stronger squad and can bring on a couple of good subs and if you have the players you can do that.

"I can't start ranting and raving to players on game day. We have a game in our head that we attempt to play but they have to learn to be adaptable."

Reading boss Brian McDermott said: "Doncaster are a good side and unorthodox in this league. At times they played some really good football. They had a spell when they passed the ball much better than us."
