Rhodes on mark once again to help Scotland shock the Dutch

Scotland Under-21s overcame a controversial decision by a Russian linesman to secure a memorable 2-1 European qualifying win over group leaders Holland.

David Wotherspoon hit a 55th-minute winner for Billy Stark’s men, who dominated much of the second half in Nijmegen.

Huddersfield Town’s Jordan Rhodes had continued his impressive goalscoring record by heading home in the second minute before Scotland were pegged back by a dubious decision from assistant referee Ilya Baryshnikov, who ruled Mark Ridgers had dropped Adam Maher’s free-kick over his line.

But Wotherspoon fired home from 16 yards as the Scots produced an excellent second-half display and Stark’s men held out under some late pressure.

The victory ended Holland’s 100 per cent record in Group 10 and moved unbeaten Scotland into second place, one point behind Holland – who have won two of the past four tournaments – after four games.

Rhodes got across his marker to head into the corner of the net from six yards for his sixth goal in three games for the Under-21s after joining the squad following his full international debut against Cyprus on Friday.

He says he was “overwhelmed” by his Scotland debut when he went on in the 87th minute of Scotland’s 2-1 win over Cyprus on Friday after being called up to the full squad for the first time.

Scotland manager Craig Levein was keen to reward the Oldham-born player for his recent goalscoring glut.

Despite the close nature of the game, Levein kept his word by giving Rhodes a run-out.

Rhodes said: “It was fantastic, probably very much overwhelming at this moment but hopefully it will sink in over the next few months.

“It was five or six minutes but more than what I was expecting.

“I was happy to be on the bench and happy to be alongside some fantastic players and come away with Scotland to a great country and tremendous training facilities.

“I’m sure going back to Huddersfield I will be better for it, having learned a few things along the way.”
