Accrington Stanley 1 Rotherham United 1: Late equaliser denies Millers sixth victory

PROMOTION-CHASING Rotherham United were frustrated by a controversial late equaliser against a spirited Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground.

Millers captain Ryan Cresswell put the Millers ahead on 38 minutes with a powerful header from a Danny Schofield corner on the same ground where he scored the winning goal last season.

It looked like he would seal the points for his side again until Sean Hessey equalised eight minutes from time from a disputed free kick given for alleged handball against Schofield.

Playing with the wind and slope in their favour in the first half Accrington threatened when lively winger Craig Lindfield forced Dale Tonge to clear off the line and then flashed a shot across the face of goal from a tight angle.

Alex Revell had a header deflected wide at the other end and Gareth Evans fired over, but there was little to choose between the sides in the first half.

Evans would have increased the lead soon after the interval but for a good save from goalkeeper Sean Murdoch and went close again with a shot from 20 yards out.

As Accrington pressed for an equaliser, Millers defenders Tonge and Michael Raines both popped up with important blocks in a goalmouth scramble.
