Automatic chances of Millers set for big test

Rotherham United have not been beaten in 13 games – more than a quarter of a season – a run that has seen them cement a play-off place in League One that not even a dramatic collapse may not compromise.

Brentford are proving just as prolific. They have lost only once in 17 matches and have a game in hand over leaders Wolves that could see them take over at the summit of the third tier.

They hold a 10-point advantage over the Millers who, if they harbour any hopes of a second successive automatic promotion, need to defeat the Bees tonight.

Rotherham have history on their side. When the promotion race came down to the crunch last season in League Two they won their final five games to finish runners-up to Gillingham and seal their ascension.

Despite turning a promising start into a sustained challenge this season and opening up a gap of 14 points on those outside the play-offs, some of whom have played a game more, manager Steve Evans this week banned talk of the play-offs.

Yet it would be churlish of him not to be privately sizing up potential opponents and what his team might require in terms of personnel.

With that in mind, Evans said yesterday he will look to strengthen his squad for the run-in with up to two loan signings before Thursday’s deadline.
