Chesterfield 1 Rotherham United 1 Evans praises Shearer’s response

ROTHERHAM UNITED boss Steve Evans praised keeper Scott Shearer for his response after his error led to Chesterfield’s early opener - ahead of the Millers hitting back to claim a point in a 1-1 derby draw at Chesterfield.

A fine 51st-minute strike from Kayode Odejayi cancelled out Jordan Bowery’s goal in the third minute - gifted to him by Shearer.

Evans said: “Within a couple of minutes we have a corner, there is a hopeful ball into our half and Scott slips and they score. That is a one in a million moment and I felt for the big fella but he showed great character, his handling was good and he made a good block in the first half.

“I think we dominated for long spells today, we played some wonderful stuff and I think we put in a really good shift,” Evans told Millers Player after the game.

“If we keep dominating for spells like we did and keep creating the chances then we will win. We have had enough possession, enough good play and enough openings around their box to win the game. (Lionel) Ainsworth was terrific until he ran out of legs, the same for Gareth Evans.”

Over the years, the Spireites have proved somewhat of a bogey side for United, with former boss Ronnie Moore famously sacked after a 5-0 televised mauling back in March 2011.

But the Millers were well worth a point at the B2Net Stadium, despite managing to fall behind early on and seeing the hosts hit the woodwork twice in the first half.

Bowery tapped home after a slip from Shearer let in Drew Talbot, but John Sheridan’s Spireites, without a league victory this season, couldn’t manage to find a second goal, despite their best efforts with ex-Barnsley man Odejayi punishing them after the break.

The burly striker, whose performance in the midweek loss at Northampton was labelled as outstanding by boss Steve Evans, showed power and pace to get away from Sam Hird before firing home to the delight of the big Millers away contingent six minutes after the interval.
