Former Millers boss Robins invited to apply for old job

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart says he would welcome an application from former manager Mark Robins as the search for Andy Scott’s successor begins.

Scott, 39, was sacked last night just 11 months into a three-year contract. Last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Oxford United left the Millers eight points adrift of the League Two play-offs with nine games remaining.

It was their second successive defeat and came amid a run of just one win in eight games.

Robins has been out of work since leaving Barnsley last summer, the club he joined after departing Rotherham.

The former Manchester United striker has been one of the most successful managers in the Millers’ recent history, steering them comfortably to Football League safety despite a 17-point deduction.

Stewart said: “I’ve got no-one lined up, we’ll take our time. We are wanting managers out of work or in work to apply, who are capable of getting us out of League Two and into League One to begin a period of incremental success.

“If Mark Robins wants to throw his hat into the ring he can do; we are inviting anyone to do so.”

Stewart also confirmed that with Rotherham set to return to their hometown and a new stadium this summer, they would be willing to pay compensation for a manager currently in employment – if it was for the right candidate.

“That’s a no-brainer,” he said. “It’s important we get where we want to be.”
