Former Millers striker Le Fondre set to boost Evans’s transfer kitty

STEVE EVANS enjoyed a dream start in charge of the Millers before second-placed Shrewsbury underlined their promotion credentials.

The Millers soon went ahead when Ryan Cresswell headed home after a corner.

Shrewsbury recovered and Terry Gornell equalised with a low shot from 20 yards past Rhys Taylor and the Shrews, unbeaten at home in 30 matches, went ahead when Aaron Wildig tapped in.

Gornell made sure of the points with another shot into the bottom corner to leave Rotherham in 10th place and five points adrift of the play-offs.

Former Crawley chief Evans said: “When you play the top sides, it doesn’t matter how much of the ball you’ve got or possession, if you make mistakes you’ll be punished.

“We got a good start and it is a shame really because we should have been three up at half-time and the game should have been over as a contest.”

At least Evans should be able to move into the transfer market in the summer thanks to a former Rotherham striker.

Adam Le Fondre scored twice in Reading’s 3-1 win at Southampton which sent the Royals to the top of the Championship on Friday night.

Under the terms of the transfer agreement, promotion to the Premier League for Reading will be worth several hundred thousand pounds to Rotherham.

On Saturday, the Millers got off to an unbelievable start with a goal in the second minute.

Pringle had already fired over before Evans earned a corner.

Mullins, beyond the far post, headed back into the danger area, Taylor’s challenge forced a half-clearance and Cresswell rose to send a header just under the bar.

Evans sprinted from the dugout and ran 10 yards onto the pitch, leaping up and punching the air in delight.

Alex Revell then had a low shot deflected inches wide with the goalkeeper beaten as the Millers kept up a furious pace.

After all their efforts, Rotherham found themselves pegged back in stoppage time.

Jacobson played the ball up to Collins, who switched a neat little back-heeler into the path of Gornell, who strode forward before striking a 22 yarder which appeared to get a little deflection as it flashed low to Taylor’s right.

Shrewsbury went ahead in the second minute of the second half when former Barnsley man Nicky Wroe went round Taylor and steadied himself before slipping the ball across to Wildig to score.

The points were secured by a quality third goal on 67 minutes. Gornell ran from midfield, took a return ball and then struck a fine low shot from 20 yards.
