Hooligans ‘caught on CCTV’ will be found, police warn

Several stewards were attacked and injured during clashes inside and outside the New York Stadium after Rotherham’s 2-1 win over Millwall.

There were reports of bricks being thrown outside the ground and that a female steward was hit and needed medical attention.

A number of police officers also received minor injuries, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Trouble flared up after Rotherham scored their second goal against Millwall in the 85th minute.

A number of Millwall supporters tried to invade the home seating areas.

Police in protective helmets were called as missiles were thrown.

A police spokesman said: “Several stewards were attacked, leaving two with minor injuries, and additional police officers were deployed to restore order. As fans left the ground, further disorder occurred.

“A number of police officers also received minor injuries.”

Although no arrests were made, police said they had plenty of CCTV evidence to ensure perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“No arrests were made, but having secured comprehensive evidence including detailed CCTV footage, we will be conducting a post-incident investigation into this disorder, which fans of both clubs played a part in.”

Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin said on Saturday: “Officers have worked with ‎both clubs prior to today’s game in an attempt to prevent such unacceptable behaviour.

“Again we see a minority of individuals spoil the event for many others. They aren’t a true representation of genuine football supporters and have no place in football. Such action can not be tolerated

“I thank the bravery and courage of stewards and police officers in tackling such criminal acts and we will now review evidence to identify and bring to justice those that are responsible for such criminal acts.”
