Millers finally end their exile with triumphant return to Rotherham

May 2008: Rotherham beat Barnet 1-0 in what turns out to be the last game at Millmoor as plans are announced to move to Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield while a new stadium is built.

January 2010: The former Guest and Chrimes Foundry is confirmed as the site of the town’s new football ground with the cost of the stadium estimated at £20m. Plans are also revealed for a second phase of work that will include leisure facilities, a hotel and gym.

November, 2010: Outline planning permission is granted for the first phase of the development, the stadium.

October, 2011: After months spent working on the foundations, the builders are able to erect the first section of the stadium’s steelwork.

December 19, 2011: The New York Stadium is born, as Rotherham reveal the name of their new home. The name relates to Guest and Chrimes having made fire hydrants on the site that were exported to New York.

July 16, 2012: Chairman Tony Stewart, pictured, collects the keys from the builders on behalf of the club to complete phase one of his masterplan for the site.

Autumn, 2012: Phase two of the 17-acre sight (the football stadium, car parks and landscaping account for 11 acres) is due to get under way, namely constructing the leisure facilities, gym and hotel.
