Peterborough chairman expresses admiration for Rotherham United boss Evans

Peterborough sacked Darren Ferguson on Saturday after a poor run of results and Millers boss Evans was immediately installed as favourite.

Evans’s knows MacAnthony and his family home is in Peterborough.

But Evans appeared to distance himself from the job yesterday, without ruling it out completely.

“My focus is on doing a job here, my focus is on Watford (tonight),” Evans told the media on Monday.

“I understand where the speculation comes from. I have a good relationship with the chairman down there, I have a good relationship with Barry Fry.

“Darren Ferguson lost his job on Saturday, so, with due respect to him, it wouldn’t be fitting for me to make another comment.”

But MacAnthony said on Monday night: “Steve is from the area so he would be linked to it but I’m sure he spoke about it in a very respectful manner.

“We have a brilliant relationship, he was a fan, he comes to our games, his son used to play for us.

“People see that and put two and two together and get 10.

“Steve’s done an amazing job at Rotherham and they’re a great football club.

“But you’ve got to tread carefully when people put two and two together because it upsets rival fans and it upsets rival clubs and that’s not my intention.

“Steve is employed by a football club, if he wasn’t he is someone I would speak to because of his record.”

MacAnthony added: “I would never speak to someone who is already in a job.

“I don’t want a yes man, someone who is their own person who can come in and reinvigorate.

“Some are with football clubs so there’s no way I’m paying a fee. I don’t want to be paying compensation.”
