Rotherham getting set to face familiar foes

The League Two play-off winners ended Rotherham’s bid to make it to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last season, beating the Millers 2-1 in the northern section semi-final at the Highbury Stadium.

It was one of two ignominious defeats suffered by the Millers at the hands of lower league opposition in three days, as on the previous Saturday Steve Evans’s men had been stunned by the same scoreline at home to Rochdale in the FA Cup.

Those early exits from the cup competitions at least freed Rotherham up to complete what was a second successive promotion.

Now in the Championship, stabilising that position is the target, with Evans set to make changes tonight to the team that opened their second-tier campaign with a defeat to Derby County on Saturday.

Fleetwood began life in League One with a win at Crewe and manager Graham Alexander knows they will have to be at their best to engineer a repeat of last season’s cup shock.

“It will be a very tough game, one of the toughest fixtures at this stage of the competition,” said Alexander.

“They have a great stadium, strong vocal support and they are a good team to play against.”
