On-loan James Tavernier smashed home two goals to extend their unbeaten run to 15 games. Wade Elliott’s goal was all City could muster.

“We were fantastic,” Evans said. “We showed all the qualities it takes to beat an excellent side. Steve Cotterill has signed some super players and its evident when you watch them play why they’re up there at the top of the form table.

“I think the only concern we had at half-time was why we weren’t 4-0 up after all the chances we’d created and good positions we’d got in.

“To be fair they (City) have penetrated us, but the goal is a magnificent strike and we were right behind it and if that had got them a point here today you’d have said that was worthy of getting them one.

“We worked extremely hard today but I think there was three good teams out there, us, Bristol City and the officials.”

Rotherham are a point off third-placed Leyton Orient, five points off second-placed Brentford.
