Scott going on offensive as Millers look to make immediate progress

AS Rotherham United bid to reach the FA Cup third round for the first time since dropping out of the Championship in 2005, manager Andy Scott has promised to adopt an adventurous approach in the hope of progressing without the need for a replay.

The Millers face a difficult tie at the home of fellow League Two outfit Shrewsbury Town, who are fourth in the table and 10 points better off than Scott’s men in 11th place.

United did claim a point when the two sides met at the Don Valley Stadium in September, Lewis Grabban putting the home side ahead only for Shrewsbury to equalise through former Leeds United trainee Shane Cansdell-Sherriff on the stroke of half-time.

But Graham Turner’s side are unbeaten this term on home soil, winning seven out of nine league games.

Despite that, Rotherham manager Scott is urging his side to book their place in the third-round draw, which will be made tomorrow, at the first attempt.

He said: “We don’t need a replay. We want to win it first time out.

“We might take a few more chances than we normally would do in a league game to try and get the win because December is a very busy time and having another game is not ideal.”

Rotherham, who were knocked out in the first round of the Cup last season by BlueSquare Premier side York City after a replay, will be without Jon Harley due to the left-back not being granted permission to play by parent club Notts County.

Sam Wood, however, is available after being granted permission to play by parent club Brentford, as is Bradford City loanee Guy Branston.

Today’s trip is the first of several long-hauls for the Millers in December, hence why Scott is so keen to win at the first attempt. In the league, they face games at Hereford and Cheltenham along with another away game at Macclesfield.
