Scotland given cause for concern by injury to Fletcher

Steven Fletcher is expected to withdraw from the Scotland squad for their Euro 2012 Euro qualifying game against Liechtenstein at Hampden tomorrow.

The Wolves striker was due to have a foot injury assessed yesterday by the Hampden medical team and is a major doubt.

Defender Steven Whittaker is carrying a calf knock and will also be assessed while striker Chris Iwelumo is again out with a hamstring injury which caused him to miss the draw against Lithuania in Kaunas on Friday night.

Defenders Lee Wallace and Kevin McNaughton are back in the squad after missing the Lithuania match with foot and groin injuries respectively.

Goalkeeper Iain Turner has been drafted in as a precaution after David Marshall hurt his elbow.

Scotland assistant manager Peter Houston said: "Fletcher will be assessed and the physios and doctors will let us know.

"Iwelumo is out, he didn't turn up (for training), he was struggling.

"But Lee Wallace has turned up and he will do some work with the physios and Kevin McNaughton will join us."

Kenny Miller started up front on his own, as expected, in Kaunas while coach Craig Levein sprung a surprise with his first selection for a competitive game by choosing Steven Naismith ahead of James McFadden on the left flank.

McFadden came on midway through the second half and joined Miller up front for the last 20 minutes, with Naismith also getting further forward in the latter stages.

Some observers fear Levein missed a good chance to take three points by failing to adopt a more ambitious approach as the game developed. However, Miller feels Levein's 4-5-1 formation and the players' work rate allowed Scotland to dominate.

Miller said: "I felt we took the game to Lithuania on Friday night. We played with one up front but you saw in the first half how high we pressed the ball and how hard we worked to try to get the ball back as soon as we lost it.

"That's the way you have to play. The energy we've got in the midfield with Fletch (Darren Fletcher) and Broony (Scott Brown) in particular in the middle and wee Naisy out wide, you have got to play like that and I think you will see the same on Tuesday."
