Scunthorpe 0 Burnley 0: Iwelumo goes close but Howe is denied win

Eddie Howe could not inspire Burnley to victory in his first game in charge as struggling Scunthorpe United's stubborn resistance ensured a stalemate at Glanford Park.

Howe, 33, was last week unveiled as Brian Laws's successor but the new Clarets manager could not mark his debut with a victory after substitute Chris Iwelumo saw his 66th-minute header hit a post.

Scunthorpe have the worst home record in the Championship, winning just once this season, but the result also left Burnley with only one win on their travels this term.

Burnley, who lost defender Clarke Carlisle at half-time to injury, almost found the net when Iwelumo connected with a cross from Chris Eagles and headed against a post.
