Scunthorpe United 1 Doncaster Rovers 3: O'Kelly praise for battling Rovers

DONCASTER assistant manager Richard O'Kelly paid tribute to Rovers after they comfortably overpowered rivals Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

Martyn Woolford headed the hosts in front in the 11th minute but Billy Sharp's clinical finish drew Rovers level in the 31st minute after Rob Jones had misjudged John Oster's pass.

Former Iron favourite Sharp then fired the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the 59th minute after Jones clumsily fouled him and James O'Connor headed home a third for Doncaster with 18 minutes left.

The result sees Scunthorpe without a win in six matches and further underlines Doncaster's play-off pedigree as they dominated the second period but wasted further chances.

O'Kelly said: "It was a fantastic result and great for everybody who was a neutral or a Doncaster Rovers supporter.

"Billy Sharp got on the end of the two chances, stuck them away and worked really hard throughout.

"We've started the season okay and three points moves you right up the division.

"There's going to be a lot of moving and shaking so hopefully we can be up there at the end of the season. Our togetherness and the way we supported each other was terrific."

Scunthorpe had begun brightly and duly led when left-back Eddie Nolan swung in a superb cross and Woolford rose highest at the far post to send in a fine header.

However, they faded badly and came off second-best as Rovers dominated. Iron boss Ian Baraclough bemoaned his side's wastefulness in front of goal and admitted Sharp's clinical finishing was a major factor in deciding the outcome.

He said: "Billy was an idol here and any player who goes back to their old club wants to do doubly well. I bet he's not the only player who goes back to his old club and scores today."
