Scunthorpe then doubled their advantage four minutes before the break when Scott Wiseman’s low cross was slotted home by Gary McSheffrey.

The Tykes now sit third-bottom and two points off safety as the pressure continues to build on manager Lee Johnson who said: “I thought, first half, we were very good.

“We asked the players to show that spirit of attack. Straight away we got a shot off after Ben Pearson made that driving run.

“People were bright and positive in our intent. Then we can’t legislate for that, it was a poor goal to concede.

“We kept going. I thought we were the better side in the first half. But we conceded another goal as we failed to stop the cross.

“We can’t get it over the line. Tangs (Nyatanga) had a good header and Smudge (Michael Smith) had a couple of good shots. That’s the way it’s going for us. You can’t keep conceding poor goals, particularly the first goal. The first goal in a match sets the tone.

“Then we get the penalty and miss that as well! Sometimes you think if the footballing gods are with you or not.

“At half time, we tried to rally them because we genuinely felt we could get back into the game.

“There have been far too many individual errors.”
