Seasiders and Bluebirds put on Sunday best

Kevin Phillips scored his first goals for Blackpool as Ian Holloway’s men maintained their winning start to the season at the expense of newly-promoted Peterborough.

The Seasiders opened their campaign with a 1-0 win at Hull and Phillips, 38, set them on their way to a second successive victory with a clinical first-half header. The evergreen striker, who signed a one-year deal at Bloomfield Road following his release from Birmingham, struck again three minutes after the restart with another predatory effort. The visitors pulled a goal back through George Boyd in the 82nd minute but Blackpool hung on for victory.

Cardiff inflicted a convincing Severnside derby defeat on a Bristol City side for whom the alarm bells are already ringing after just two games of the new npower Championship season.

The Robins were undone 3-0 at home by Ipswich on the opening day and faired little better yesterday. Mark Hudson headed Cardiff ahead, Craig Conway added a sweet second before Robert Earnshaw tapped-in from close range to make it three on 36 minutes. Nicky Maynard scored a late consolation.
