The duo were culpable for switching off for Chelsea's second goal, scored by Ben Chilwell and Lowe's attempted pass-back handed the hosts' fourth on a plate to Timo Werner.

Wilder, whose side prop up the Premier League table after taking just one point from their opening eight matches, said: "Max makes a mistake, which he will get over as he is a good player and a strong character and quickly after being in the game at 2-1, we are out of it at 4-1.

"He is a young player learning on the job. We brought him in to develop him, but he is having to play at the moment. He is going to make the odd mistake as young players do."

On Ramsdale's night, the Blades chief continued: "He is at fault for the second goal, we won't hide behind that.

"We had a young goalkeeper last year who made mistakes for us and we have another here. It is the road we went down and we have to stay with it.

"He made some decent saves as well. It is not great in front of him as well and we have conceded some really poor goals.

"He has to come through it as we all do and he will be okay.

"He is a positive character and a very good young goalkeeper playing in a team who aren't doing as well as it should be, even though you are bang up against it playing the teams we have in this little period."
