John Lundstram’s desire epitomises spirit of Sheffield United, says Billy Sharp

Sheffield United’s team largely picked itself in the first half of the season, but Billy Sharp and John Lundstram in particular are relishing a battle for places.

Before January, second-guessing the line-up was a doddle: Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood, Fleck, Stevens and once they hit their purple patch in late autumn, McGoldrick and Mousset up front. Five January signings changed that and while none has nailed down a place, the extra competition has brought the best out of striker Sharp and midfielder Lundstram.

“It’s a healthy battle,” said Sharp, who has responded with three goals in his last four appearances.

“I’m just happy to be playing and to chip in with goals, it’s my job, and what I need to do to stay in the team.”

Lundstram looked most at risk, having only started four of seven games before Sander Berge’s £22m signing as he appeared to run slightly out of steam.

The Norwegian’s arrival has given Lundstram a second wind, scoring the winner at home to Bournemouth and making the only goal of Saturday’s game against Norwich City.

“When he’s come on he’s put in a shift and a good performance,” said Sharp, who headed in Lundstram’s first-half cross on Saturday.

“He gives us a lot of energy and he got an assist as well, which is important.

“He runs so much in a game, he provides assists and goals. He’s a real menace to other teams and a great player to have.”

Wilder has been delighted with Lundstram’s attitude.

“He needed to come out of the team, if you analyse his performances and we have to always,” he said. “Sander has played a part in three out of four wins.

“Players shouldn’t be scared or shy of competition and challenges and John hasn’t.

“It just epitomises the group and the culture we are trying to create.

“The way he has been in the changing room when he hasn’t played and then comes back in and plays like he has, I think that’s a fantastic example of how you should be as a professional footballer.

“Take the disappointments on the chin and enjoy the good times when they are happening.”
