Sheffield Wednesday 2 Carlisle United 1: Antonio strikes later Owls winner

Sheffield Wednesday beat Carlisle at Hillsborough today in League One to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

The Owls are boosted by the return of winger Keith Treacy (illness) and striker Ryan Lowe (groin) on the bench but defenders Julian Bennett (hamstring) and Reda Johnson (thigh) remain sidelined. Defender Jon Otsemobor is ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Owls took the lead when Jermaine Johnson’s shot was parried by Adam Collin and Chris Lines was on hand to poke the ball over the line.

Wednesday should have added further goals before half-time, Johnson once again thwarted by Collin when one-on-one, and the goalkeeper then dived left to palm away Nile Ranger’s first-time volley.

And the Owls looked like they were going to pay for all their spurned chances when James Berrett drilled home from 25 yards.

But in stoppage time, Michail Antonio cut in fron the left and hammered a low shot inside Collin’s left-hand post to send the 21,934 crowd into massive celebrations.

With city rivals United losing at MK Dons, Wednesday are now just a point off second place with two games remaining.
