The experienced duo have signed 12-month deals and the Blades will now seek to seal a move for Wallace, while also being in the hunt for a full-back and striker.

Clough says rival clubs are also keen on Wallace, the club’s No 1 midfield target with Conor Coady unlikely to join for a second loan spell next term. The Liverpool schemer looks likely to move to the Championship.

On Davies and Porter, Clough said: “Ben had one or two offers, but having had him on loan last year, it was a case if we could some get something sorted he’d stay here for another year.

“I know Chris has divided opinion among supporters at times, but I think he won a lot of them over in the second half of last season and one thing you can’t deny is that he scored 11 goals since Christmas.”

Clough remains relaxed about defender Harry Maguire, who has temporarily halted talks over a new deal to assess his options. The defender has a season left at Bramall Lane. Wolves have made two unsuccessful bids for him.

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Hull City’s Matty Fryatt on a three-year contract. The striker rejected the offer of a new deal with Premier League Hull.
